Marathon is Bungie’s upcoming sci-fi PvP extraction shooter, set on the hostile colony world of Tau Ceti IV. Players become cybernetic Runners, dropping into high-risk matches to scavenge loot, survive rival squads, and extract alive. Bungie is positioning it as a multiplayer-focused experience with full cross-play and cross-save support across platforms.
Story overview
Set in the mysterious ruins of Tau Ceti IV, Marathon centers on a vanished colony and the dangerous factions now fighting over what remains. As a Runner, you’re part mercenary, part scavenger—chasing valuable resources and hidden secrets while a larger, evolving mystery unfolds in the background. Instead of a traditional single-player campaign, Bungie has described the game as a seasonal, multiplayer-driven experience with narrative elements delivered over time
Gameplay Mechanics (Marathon)
Marathon is Bungie’s team-based PvPvE extraction shooter, built around high-stakes runs on the lost colony world of Tau Ceti IV. You drop in as a cybernetic mercenary called a Runner, scavenge valuables, complete contracts, survive other players and hostile forces, then try to exfil (extract) with your loot. If you don’t make it out, you lose what you were carrying.
Infil → Loot → Exfil (Risk/Reward Loop)
Every match is a “run”: you enter a hostile zone, hunt for resources and objectives, and decide how long to stay. The longer you push your luck, the bigger the payoff but the more chances you give other squads to ruin your day.
PvPvE Encounters and Threat Layers
It’s not just players. Zones include AI enemies and hazards, so fights can turn into messy three-way problems: you vs. another team vs. the environment. Smart play often means choosing when to fight, when to third-party, and when to vanish.
Runner “Shells” and Build Crafting
You play as a Runner, and your power comes from your loadout/build weapons, gear, and abilities tuned to your playstyle. Successful extractions let you bring loot forward to assemble stronger builds for future runs.
Contracts, Factions, and Discoverable Narrative
Progress isn’t only about loot. Runs include contracts and discoverable narrative items. Completing objectives can unlock Codex-style entries outside of matches, so story is something you earn through play rather than a traditional campaign.
Seasons and a Living World
Marathon is designed as an evolving seasonal game: Bungie describes a “living universe” where seasons (about three months) add content and shift how progression and mastery works over time.
